Snail Mucin Extract for Skin Care - Hydrating & Anti-Aging Cosmetic Ingredient

You would not be blamed if you were taken aback at the initial thought of putting the mucus that is excreted by snails on your face.  This very thing however is beginning to take the skin care industry by storm.  While used as far back as Ancient Greece through the Middle Ages, the unique practice of using snail slime to improve skin conditions traveled through South Africa, then Korea, and has just recently emerged as a popular skincare ingredient in the United States.  Now you might be wondering, why snail slime of all things?  The intuitive thought is that since this slime is used to protect and heal the snail’s exposed body from bumps, cuts and scrapes, it must be able to provide some similar benefits to human skin as well... which it does!  This slime is full of beneficial ingredients that do wonders on human skin, such as hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, copper peptides, proteins, allantoin, chitosan, proteoglycans, antioxidants and elastin, among others.  These active constituents of snail mucin all work together to provide many benefits to the skin when applied topically.  These benefits are widely believed to boost the production of elastin and collagen, hydrate the skin, repair dry or damaged skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and protect the skin from free radicals.

A small amount of butylene glycol is added to this snail secretion filtrate in order to minimize the stickiness and make it easier to handle.  Phenoxyethanol is added as a preservative to ensure no bacterial or microbial growth occurs during storage and transit.  It is water soluble and the suggested usage rate is 1 – 5% (weight/volume) when combining into topical skincare formulations.  This is intended for topical use only, do not ingest.
